| Since being elected Member of
Parliament for Saffron Walden in 1977 it has always been my
aim to be as accessible and available as possible. Democracy is a two-way process – I am keen to know the views of my constituents on matters of the day. I am equally anxious to be able to offer help with problems that they experience. Hopefully, this Website will go someway to achieving those ends, in a new way. Saffron Walden gives its name to a constituency made up of almost four hundred square miles of North-West Essex, the largest seat in that county. Even now, people in Halstead, which is part of Braintree District Council, find it difficult to appreciate that they live in the Saffron Walden constituency. It is hard for me to appear as often as I would like in each of the hundred villages and towns that I represent. After all, the House of Commons demands my attendance for over thirty weeks every year. So although I attend innumerable functions, pay frequent visits wherever opportunity arises, and hold regular surgeries – correspondence is still very important in establishing contact between constituents and the Member. I hope that this website is informative, as well as another way of constituents contacting and gaining access to their M.P. |
