| An ever growing Airport in the Essex
countryside is a threat to the rural environment. It leads
to urbanisation, pollution and a reduced quality of life. What London needs is an efficient and effective hub airport which will uphold Britain’s competitive position in the world. For good or ill that airport is Heathrow. Stansted cannot be a carbon copy. There is runway capacity all around the country to accommodate low cost flights to popular destinations. People do not have to come to the south-east. The jobs created by further expansion at Stansted area increasingly causing people to travel many miles mainly by road to fill them. Local unemployment has virtually disappeared. Local roads cannot cope with the weight of extra traffic. The train service between Stansted and London has deteriorated. Commuter journeys take longer in carriages that are no longer fit for purpose. Stansted is sometimes held up by businessmen as necessary for the continued prosperity of the East of England. This is easily said by those who do not have to share the burden of noise, fumes and traffic delays. Yet the advantage of the airport is mainly taken by holiday makers, people with second homes in Europe and those who favour cheap stag weekends in the likes of Prague and Bratislava. Whatever the justification for those types of trips they are not exactly bolstering the British economy. Stansted is the wrong type of airport in the wrong place. Damage will outweigh any possible benefits if it is allowed to double to a size bigger than Heathrow.
